1.0 PURPOSE 1.1 This procedure is to provide instructions for the repacking of pumps in various safety-related systems.

4.0 LIMITS AND PRECAUTIONS 4.1 Some of the equipment covered by this procedure may be used in systems which have been subjected to radioactive contamination.

Precautions against the spread of this contamination must be taken.

5.0 EQUIPMENT AND PERSONNEL REQUIREMENTS 5.1 Personnel assigned should be knowledgeable, experienced and qualified to perform the specified tasks as determined by the appropriate supervisor.

5.2 Tools (as required).

5.3 Size and type of packing material as recommended by manufacturer providing it meets the requirements for "N" class packing. If there is any question concerning the ' type or class of packing to be used, contact the Nuclear Mechanical / Building Service Supervisor.

6.0 REQUIRED INITIAL CONDITIONS AND PLANT STATUS 6.1 The equipment to be worked on is to be isolated and removed from service using an Equipment Clearance Order per CP-li5, In-Plant

! Equipment Clearance and Switching Orders, and approved Operating Procedures where applicable.

6.2 Obtain a Radiation Work Permit (RWP), if needed.

Completed By Date 7.2 PACKING INSTALLATION USING BRAIDED PACKING CAUTION: Ensure all locking devices are reinstalled during reassembly. The Nuclear Mechanical / Building Service Supervisor will resolve any questions.

7.2.1 Measure Pump Shaf t and Stuffing Box inside diameter.

Record on Enclosure 1, Page 7 .

7.2.2 Identify type and size of packing used on Enclosure 1, Page 7 .

7.2.3 Install packing (staggered 900) and lantern rings.

7.2.4 Tighten last ring of packing snug then loosen nuts to finger-tight.

7.3 PACKING INSTALLATION USING GRAFOIL LOOSE RIBBON CAUTION: Ensure all locking devices are reinstalled during reassembly. The Nuclear Mechanical / Building Service Supervisor will resolve any questions.

7.3.1 . Measure Pump Shaf t and Stuffing Box inside diameter. Record on Enclosure 1, Page 7 .

7.3.2 Identify type and size of packing used on Enclosure 1, Page 7 .

NOTE: An Anti-Extrusion Ring will be used at the very bottom of the Stuffing Box,.above and below the Lantern Ring, and at very top of Packing Chamber. Any exceptions must be l

specified by the Nuclear Mechanical / Building Service Supervisor.

7.3.3 In .the appropriate locations, wrap Grafoil Ribbon Packing around Pump Shaft, shove ribbon into Stuffing Box and compress to approximately 50%.

7.3.4 Align Lantern Ring in its proper position.

7.3.5 Tighten last ring of packing snug then loosen nuts to finger-tight.

. 8.0 POST-MAINTENANCE TESTING AND SYSTEM RESTORATION 8.1 Upon completion of the maintenance activity, return to service by use of an approved Operational Procedure or by release of the Equipment Clearance Order.

8.2 A functional test of the system must be run by Operations per approved Operational Procedures or Surveillance Procedures. Any signs of leakage should be reported to the Nuclear Mechanical / Building Service Supervisor for resolution. .

8.3 Mechanical Personnel should check pump leak-off and Packing Gland temperature during functional testing. Notify the Mechanical / Building Service Supervisor if problems are noted.
