3.1.2 Structural Framing Acceptance criteria for structural framing items:

a.

Framing shall be properly aligned, leveled and plumb prior to any field connections.

b.

Members in completed frames true-to-line and free from bends, twists and open joints.

c.

All joint surfaces including those adjacent to bolt heads, nuts or washers free of scale except tight mill scale.

3.1.3 Bolt Holes Acceptance criteria for bolt holes:

Holes cut, drilled or punched at right angles to surf ace a.

of the' metal.

b.

Holes not enlarged by burning.

Holes cleanly cut without torn or ragged edges.

c.

d.

Outside burrs ground smooth.

3.1.4 Bolts Acceptance criteria for bolts:

a.

Bolts are 7/8" diameter (unless otherwise noted),

b.

Bolts rest squarely against metal or washer unless bevel p

washer is utilized.

c.

Bolts are A-325 or A-490 (unless otherwise noted on Engineer-ing drawings).

d.

Bolts flush with or project past face of nut when completely installed.

7-12-78 3 of 6 3.2 METHODS OF T,IGHTENING BOLTS The QC Inspector shall verify one of the two acceptable methods for tightening bolts.

3.2.1 Turn-Of-Nut Method a.

Bolts are brought to a snug tight condition.

b.

Parts of the joint are brought into good contact with each other.

c.

Final nut rotation is in accordance with Table in Figure 1.

d.

Bolts may be reused only with approval of the Engineer.

When required nut rotation has been attained, end of bolt e.

marked with Nissen marker.

f.

Inspect a minimum of 10% of the bolts, but not less than eg two bolts in each connection, selected at random.

3.2.2 Calibrated Wrench Method If this method is used, the wrenches will be set according a.

to a table provided by the Civil QC Supervisor.

b.

Wrenches calibrated once each working day for each bolt diameter being installed.

Recalibrate wrenches if significant change is noted in c.

surface condition of bolts, nuts or washers.

d.

" Touch-up" previously tightened bolts which may have been loosened by tightening subsequent bolts.

e.

Inspect a minimum of 10% of the bolts, but not less than two bolts in each connection, selected at random.

3.3 GALVANIZING The QC Inspector shall verify that galvanizing is not used for

~

structural steel installed in the containment, or encased in concrete without Engineering approval.

' ut rotation is relative to bolt, regardless of the element (nut or bolt) being turned.

For bolts igstalled by 1/2 turn and less, the tolerance should be plus or minus 30 ; for bolts igstalled by 2/3 turn and more, the tolerance should be plus or minus 45 biio research woric has been performed by the Council to establish the turn-of-nut procedure when bolt lengths exceed 12 diameters.
