SCOPE 1.1 This standard orescribes methods and recuirements for the joining of reinforcing bar to flat bar material by means of full cenetration butt welds to fabricate radial shear bar assemblies for installation in concrete containment struc-tures in accordance with Paragraph 2.1.

2.

REFERENCES 2.1 Soecification 2323-SS-10 (Gibbs and Hill, Inc.)

2.2 FIGURE 1 - Weld Joint Design

- - 2.3 FIGURE 2 - Tensile Test Specimen 3.

BASE MATERIAL 3.1 Reinforcing bar shall be furnished in accordance with and to the recuirements of ASTM A 615 GR 60.

In addition, the material shall be restricted to a comcositional carbon ecuivalent limit of.55% as determined by the following formula :

%Mn + %Cu + %Ni + %Cr - %Mo - %V CE = C +

6 40 20 10 50 10 3.2 Shear Bars (1" X 4") shall be furnished from ASTM A 572 Grade 60 Plate.

3.3 Receipt of Certified Materials Test Reports is recuired prior to fabrication.

4.

FILLER MATERIAL 4.1 The Shielded Metal Arc Process shall emoloy electrodes of the E-8018 classification per SFA 5.5.

n - n v A sA cvv 35-1195-WES-12, July 21, 1975 REVISION 1, May 26, 1977 par,E 3 of 7 5.

JOINT PREPARATION 5.1 The rebar to bar weld joint shall be orepared as shown in Figure 1 by torch cutting, grinding or a combination of these.

Surfaces to be welded shall be cleaned by wire brush-ing, grinding or solvent to remove oil, grease, dirt, rust, loose scale, paint or other contaminants.

6.

PREHEAT 0

6.1 Preheat shall be 150 F minimum, acolied by oxy-fuel heat-ing and maintained for a minimum distance from the weld

' ' ~ -~

joint of 3 inches as determined by temoerature indicating crayons.

6.2 No welding shall be conducted during ceriods of inclement weather unless a protective environment is orovided. A 0

minimum of 200 F oreheat is mandatory when moisture is ore-sent on surfaces to be welded.

7.

FELD PROCEDURE 7.1 Weld Procedure Oualification shall conform to the anoli-cable reouirements of ASME B&PV Code,Section IX, exceat that bend specimens are not recuired.

7.2 Two (2) full size section tensile soecimens shall be cre-cared from the largest rebar size to be joined as shown in Figure 2, and upon satisfactory evidence of tensile strength (75 ksi) shall satisfy the test requirements of the rebar to bar weld joint connection cualification.

7.3 Details of welding oarameters are given in the acolicable Weld Procedure Specifications.

WELDOR OUALIFICATION 8.1 Prior to oroduction welding, each weldor shall produce two weldments as given in 7.2 above, and the test results shall eoual or exceed the specified minimum strength (75,000 PSI).

The extent of croduction welding allowed shall be restricted to the WPS and to the position (s) so cualified.

9.

PRODUCTION WELDING 9.1 Each oualified weldor shall be assigned a symbol to identify the work he produces. This symbol shall be affixed by use of paint stick or imoression stamos to an area on the bar (1" X 4"), near mid-widt'h and accroximately 1 inch from the weld toe.

9.2 Documentation of radial shear bar weld activities shall be a responsibility of the Ouality Assurance Decartment.

10. PRODUCTION TESTING 10.1 Examination of arc-welded joints shall be conducted in accor-dance with Paragraoh 7.0, Gibbs and Hill Soecification 2323-55-10, except that the minimum average tensile strength shall be 75,000 PSI. Tensile testing will be done by B&R OA/0C.
11. WELD REPAIR 11.1 Weld defects discovered by visual examination shall be re-paired by removal of the defect (s) employing air-are goug-ing and/or grinding and/or by the additio.n of weld metal to restore weld integrity and geometry in accordance with the established weld procedure specification. Re-examination of the repair (s) shall be accomolished by the NDE method that discovered the defect, and a]l repairs shall be examined to the same extent as tne original weld.

35-1195-WES-12, July 21, 1975 REVISION 1, May 26, 1977 PAGE 5 of 7 11.2 When excavation of a defect (s) is reouired, the resulting cavity shall be restricted to a death and width dimension of 3/8 inches.

In the event the defect (s) is not comolete-ly removed after the excavation limits are reached, the weld joint shall be reolaced.

12. MATERIAL TRACEABILITY l

12.1 Filler material lot number is to be documented on each weld number line in the sign-off soace.
