1.0 PURPOSE / DISCUSSION 1.1 The purpose of this procedure is to describe the actions to be taken in the event of hydrogen accumulation in the drywell and/or containment, primarily as a result of the zircalloy - water reaction and dissociation o f water following a loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA).
1.2 This procedure will interface with the various Emergency Procedures.
1.3 The containment and drywell hydrogen analyzers and drywell purge i
compressors will automatically start following the receipt of a LOCA signal.
However, they should also be started manually anytime it is suspected that the core has-been uncovered and hydrogen generation is a possibility. To begin the hydrogen removal process, the operator will start the drywell purge compressors (if not in operation) to force the combustible gas out of the drywell into the larger containment volume.
Coincident with this operation, containment hydrogen recombiners will be started to begin the recombination process necessary for hydrogen removal.
If deemed necessary, the containment purge compressor can be used in conjunction with the containment cooling system to further dilute

3 gases.
2.0 SYMPTOMS 2.1 Prolonged indicated or. suspect'ed_ reactor water level below the top of
,. active fuel.

.i
'2.2 Increasing" hydrogen c'oncentration'in the drywell or containment as indicated locally on one or more of the combustible gas control hydrogen analyzers, or in the control room on E61-R602A or B, CTMT & DRWL Hydrogen Analyzer Recorders.
t 2.3 CONTAINMENT HYDROGEN HIGH annunciator 2.4 DRYWELL HYDROGEN HIGH an'nunciator 3.0 AUTOMATIC ACTIONS 3.1 The Containment and Drywell hydrogen analyzers and drywell purge compressors'will start automatically following the recept of a LOCA signal:
3.1.1 Reactor Low Water Level - 150.3".
3.1.2 High Drywell Pressure 1.73 PSIG.

2 Control 4.0 IMMEDIATE OPERATOR ACTIONS 4.1 ' Verify automatic actions occur.
2"~
.. NOTE Hydrogen igniters will induce periodic " burns" of accumulated hydrogen.
This may result in pressure and/or temperature " spikes" and is normal for this system.
4.2 As soon as possible following a LOCA, manually start the containment and drywell hydrogen analyzer and drywell purge compressor if they have not started automatically.
Start hydrogen igniters if reactor water level decreases to < -167".
4.3 Closely monitor drywell and containment hydrogen concentration.
5.0 SUBSEQUENT ACTIONS 5.1 Start the containment hydrogen _recombiners in accordance with SOI

5.2 Monitor drywell and cont ainment hydrogen concentrations and containment temperatures.
,a 5.3 Perfonn the verification of proper recombiner~ operation as described in SOI 04-1-01-E61-1.
Make necessary adjustmer.ts to assure proper hydrogen removal. Attempt to control hydrogen concentration as low as possible.
5.4 If deemed necessary to augment rec.ombiner operat' ion or to purge the containment of combustible and radioactive gase's, the containment purge compressor and the containment cooling system may be' aligned and started I
in accordance with SGI 04-1-01-E61-1.
This operation should be conducted
' only af ter' thorough engineering and environment evaluations have been
.. completed.
5.5 Maintain the combustible gas control subsystems in operation until the
" hydrogen gas has been eliminated 5.6 Contact Health Physics.
