ggg 3 205) REiQ. No. 03 3."2.0 :.

B6W has requested that a preliminary finding be issued as soon as the staff judged sufficient documentation was available to make a meaningful reply. We feel that at this time we are able to make a prelimihary statement regarding the acceptability of the B6W separation criteria. Based upon the information received to date, the additional information expected as a result of Iteme 033.51 of the enclosure, and the commitments for further testing documented in B-SAR 205, we conclude there is reasonable assurance that the measures outlined by B6W to comply with current separation criteria are acceptable.

Final acceptability, however, must await the Auccessful test results which are not expected to be available prior to issuance of the Preliminary Design Approval.

The following are based upon your response to Item 033.20:

1.

ESFAS and RPS reactor coolant pressure taps are located 90* apart around the pipe circumference. This is not in conformance with Section S.8 of IEEE Std 384-1974 as stat ed.

j i

The IEEE Standard states that redundant pressure taps

}

located on opposite sides of a large pipe may be considered to be separated by the pipe, but the lines leaving the pipe must be protected. We require that this criterion k

be strengthed by suitable design or interface provisions.

4 2.

Section 8.2.3.6 states that RCP monitors are provided with physical and electrica) separation. Provide a detailed description or change the wording "provided" to required" to assure proper interface with the BOP.

The SRCI reactor coolant cold leg temperature sensors for the X and Y channels are inferred to use the same e

RTD penetration. Provide an ar ended description that requires separation such as opposite sides of the pipes or provide further details and justification for the design as presented.

4.

Section 7.1.2.2.2b states that separation will be in accordance with Section 5.6.2 of IEEE Std 384-1974.

This referenced section provides three options.for meeting the requirements. Provide additional information to describe the manner of your conformance.

5.

Provide further details of how the SRCI controls within I

B5W scope of supply meet Section S.7 of IEEE Std 384-1974 as stated.

e 6.
