to use the Babcock and Wilcox Mark C 17x17 design.
The desired surveillance program is described in the enclosure.
The program requires visual inspection (e.g., by undensater television viewing system) of all the peripheral rods in the initial core fuel assemblies cnce they are noved into the spent fuel pool. At the time of refueling, the staff must be afforded 10 days advance notice of the start of inspection so that it may observe the inspections and the i
' resultant evaluations of the fuel c""as' perfon:nnce. The i
et,nclusions of the inspedon are to be provided to the staff prior j
to power ascendency. If anonulies are detected during the 100% visual j
inspection, then the applicant must conduct a follow-on investigation of a representative satrple of individual fuel rods.

The B&W fbrk C fuel design is scheduled for operation in the following plants: Ballefonte 1&2 (1979/1980); UPPSS-1 (1980), Pebble Springs
.(1980); Greenwood 2&3 (1981/1984); and Davis-Besse 2&3 (1982/1983).
