Docket Nos. STN 50-581 and 50-549 MEMORANDUM FOR: Victor Senaroya, Chief, Auxiliary Systems Branch, DSS Isa S. Sihweil, Chief, Structural Engineering Branch, DSS FROM:

Karl Kniel, Chief, Light Water Reactors Branch No. 2, DPM

SUBJECT:

VESSEL HEAD DROP FOR B&W'S 205 FUEL ASSEMBLY REACTOR VESSEL

Reference:

Memorandum, Docket No. 50-561, 0. Parr to Addresses, dated April 4, 1978, " Vessel Head Drop for B&W's 205 Fuel Assembly Reactor Vessel" The referenced memorandum gives the history of our review of this matter on the BSAR-205 and WPPSS 1 and 4 applications.

I am enclosing a copy of the reference.

The referenced memorandum notes that this matter has not been acceptably addressed in the SER input for Erie 1 and 2.

More recently, the ASB reviewer (M. Greenberg) has advised us that a similar situation exists for Greene County.

J. Wilson also advises us that this matter impacts the completion of the SWESSAR/BSAR-205 review.

In short, if the B&W analysis of the consequences of dropping the reactor vessel head assembly five feet is acceptable, our evaluation of this matter can be quickly resolved.

If the analysis is not acceptable, we should advise tFe applicants that they will be required to provide c single failure proof crane.

In view of the schedule of these applications, we request that you give priority to the completion of this task. Please review the status of this matter and inform us of the date your r vi w e-com.1, ete.
