Dear Mr. Grier:

This supplemental response to IEB 79-01B is submitted to inform you that Pressurizer Level Transmitter (LT-RC-659), which was listed as a Barton Model 764 (Lot II) has failed in service and the replacement transmitter in our stock has also failed.

This Barton Lot II transmitter was installed during this outage to replace a Barton Model 224-386 trans-mitter of lesser qualification originally installed at Beaver Valley.

We have no more Barton Lot II transmitters in our stock and we have been informed that no transmitters fully qualified for this vice can be made available in the near future.

Therefore, we ha-

,' aced the Barton Lot II transmitter with the previously installed F 2n 1 1 224-386 at Mark No. LT-RC-459.

This action has been reviewed and approved by (

Safety Committee and no unreviewed safety question is consit exist because of this action.

This transmitter (LT-RC-459) actuates a reactor trip upon pressurizer level exceeding 92 percent.

This trip protects against the loss of load with the simultaneous failure of the steam dump system and limits challenges to the pressurizer PORVs under these conditions.

This type of incident will not cause a harsh environment inside containment and therefore the Barton Model 224-386 is qualified to operate to protect against this accident.

This transmitter is used by the operator to observe pressurizer level for the purpose of termi-nating SI.

The operator has available to him two other qualified pressurizar level transmitters (LT-RC-460 and 461) which can be used for this purpose.

Transmitters 460 and 461 are powereJ from independent vital power supplies.

The use of the Bartdn Model 224-386 is temporary until a qualified i

replacement or repair can be obtained and a planned outage of sufficient duration occurs to accomplish ~ replacement.

In any event, we will install a qualified instrument in this location within the time frame for replace-1 l

ment permitted under IEB 79-01.
