GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy M190203 November 15, 2019 Chris Allen, Project Manager Storage and Transportation Licensing Branch Division of Fuel Management Office of Nuclear Material and Safeguards U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C. 20555-0001 Attention: Document Control Desk
Subject:
GEH Request for Additional Time to Respond to NRC Requests for Additional Information (RAI) for the GE Model No. 2000 (Docket No. 71-9228) to Reintroduce BWR Irradiated Fuel Content Mr. Allen, Your letter dated October 23, 2019 [Reference 1] requested additional information for the review of the amendments made to Revision 3 of the GE Model No. 2000 (GE2000) Safety Analysis Report (SAR) [Reference 2] to reintroduce GE 10x10 Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) irradiated fuel as part of the approved content (referred to as Revision 4). Reference 1 requested that GE-Hitachi Nuclear Energy Americas, LLC (GEH) provide responses to these RAIs by Friday, November 22, 2019.
GEH has evaluated several options to address these RAIs based on the teleconference between the NRC and GEH on October 21, 2019. GEH has determined the best approach is to revise and resubmit a portion of the GE2000 SAR with some of the RAI response content incorporated and provide formal responses to those RAIs that will not be included in the SAR.
Revising the applicable GE2000 SAR sections and developing the formal RAI responses will require additional time. As a result, the changes made to Revision 4 of the GE2000 SAR (Revision 5) and the RAI responses will be provided to the NRC by Friday, January 31, 2020.
