Dear Mr. Schwencer:

DOCKET N0. 50-266 POINT BEACH NUCLEAR PLANT, UN!? 1 Last Friday afternoon, we called Mr. Tranmell of your Staff con-cerning our desire to purga the Point Beach Nuclear Plant Unit 1 containment.

We explained that this purge of approximately two hours duration would not be initiated until the reactor had been shut down and the primary system cooled down to 450 F with pressure less than 1,000 psi. This purge was necessary to facilitate maintenance during the weekend outage on Unit 1 in which reinforcement was added to the auxiliary feedwater piping connection to the main feedwater line.

We appreciate your prompt response to our request. As a result of your favorable decision on this matter, we were able to significantly reduce the inconvenience to personnel and reduce the man-rem exposure necessary to complete this task. We will promptly pursue the necessary review and/or modifications to the containment purge system so that further requests of this nature will not be necessary. Thank you for your efforts in this regard.

Very truly yours, f
