R E S 0 L UT I 0 N WHEREAS, conferences are scheduled to be held on March 15 and March 16 with respect to the storage of spent fuel related to the Salem Nuclear Plant in Lower Alloways Creek Township; and WHEREAS, there are certain amendments proposed whi~h would allow a sizeable increase in the storage capacity from 264 to 1170 fuel assemblies and further extend the time of storage from 4 to 17 years; and WHEREAS, an understanding of the basis for such extensions is unclear and to allow the storage of increased amounts of fuel for an extended period of time as proposed raises certain questions with respect" to the safety and welfare of the restdents of that area including the Township of Pennsville; and WHEREAS, the disposition of such fuel may involve the roadways of this Township and the precauti~ns and safeguards which should be involved are unclear; and WHEREAS, the question of need for allowing large ~uantities of fuel to remain in storage for an extended time seems arbitrary and unreasonable with respect to the safety and welfare of the area; and WHEREAS, c~rtain opposition by intervention of interested persons has b~en undertaken in the matter of the application of Public Service Electric & Gas Company, et al., License No. DPR-70,. in proceeding No. 50-272, who is seeking a permit for such i ncreas*e of capacity and storage time; and WHEREAS, opposition to such application appears advisable to cause the questions related to preserving the health, safety and welfare of the *community to be examined into and be evaluated;
