(2) PSE&G Letter LR.:.N96218 to the NRC dated August 2, 1996, "Spent Fuel Survey Commitments" Ladies and Gentlemen:

Reference 1 *requested that Publ.ic Service Electric & Gas Company (PSE&G) notify the NRC as to the option chosen to resolve the issues associated with the Spent Fuel Pool Liner analysis. Three options were identified: revise the liner analysis to resolve NRC concerns, conduct testing, or seismically qualify the Spent Fuel Cooling System.

PSE&G will seismically qualify the Spent Fuel Pool Cooling System. This will eliminate the need to postulate a loss of forced cooling, thereby precluding the need to evaluate the liner for boiling conditions. This will also resolve other technical issues associated with boiling in the Spent Fuel Pool, as presented to the NRC in March, 1996. This effort will be completed prior to the next scheduled refueling outages for each Salem Unit, along with the establishment of a Decay Heat Management Program as previously / /

committed to in Reference 2. 0 v

Please note the Salem Spent Fuel Pool Cooling System pumps are powered from vital buses. During a loss of offsite power (LOOP) event the pumps are automatically loaded onto their respective vital bus. Therefore a LOOP event will not result in loss of 117)1)/
