Dear Mr. Miller:
On June 9, 1995, the NRC issued a Confirmatory Action Letter (CAL) for Salem Units 1 and 2. PSE&G has taken actions and provided information* concerning ~he requirements ofCAL Items 1, 2,:*and 3 and it is our understanding that these three CAL Items are complete *and have been accepted by the staff. Concerning CAL Items 4 and 5, we have completed the actions described in the Salem Restart Plan and the results of those actic;ms have been provided to the NRC's Salem Assessment Panel. .The NRC recently performed its Readiness Assessment Team Inspection (RATI) and conducted an Exit Meeting with us on June 27, 1997. At that meeting we were informed that there are no open items requiring resolution prior to restart.
- On June 27, 1997, I conducted a meeting with my senior management at Which we performed a final review of our readiness to proceed with the startup of Salem Unit 2.
The results of that meeting demonstrated to me that upon completion of required testing, Salem Unit 2 is ready for startup and entering Mode 2 on or about July 12, 1997.
