Report Number: 81-51/03L Report Date: May 29, 1981 Occurrence Date: 5/1/81 Facility: Salem Generating Station, Unit 1 Public Service Electric & Gas Company Hancocks Bridge, New Jersey 08038 IDENTIFICATION OF OCCURRENCE:

Impingement of one dead shortnose sturgeon, Acipenser brevirostrum Lesueur on the circulating water system (CWS) 12A intake trash bars.

CONDITIONS PRIOR TO OCCURRENCE:

Not Applicable DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:

One dead shortnose sturgeon, Acipenser brevirostrum Lesueur, was removed from the CWS 12A intake trash bars at 1400 hours0.0162 days
0.389 hours
0.00231 weeks
5.327e-4 months
on May 1, 1981, by Ichthyological Associates, Inc. (IA) personnel. IA is the company's ecological consultant. The shortnose sturgeon is an endangered species listed under the Endangered Species Act of 1973.

DESIGNATION OF APPARENT CAUSE OF OCCURRENCE:

Based on the prior sighting of a large dead fish in the intake, before the specimen was removed from the trash bars, it is assumed that the specimen was dead prior to-impingement.

Healthy adult and juvenile shortnose sturgeons have cruising swim speeds which range from 8.1 to 34.0 cm/sec and burst swim speeds which range from 30 to 70 cm/sec. Maximum intake velocities through the trash bars are less than these reported cruising speeds. Avoidance of the intake would have been possible by a healthy fish.
