By letter to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) dated October 27, 2015 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System Accession No. ML15300A393), Duke Energy Progress, Inc., submitted information summarizing the results of the steam generator (SG) tube inspections performed at Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1 during the spring 2015 Refueling Outage 19.

The NRC staff has completed its review of this report and concludes that the licensee provided the information required by the technical specifications and that no additional follow-up actions are required.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

By letter to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) dated October 27, 2015 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System Accession Number ML15300A393),

Duke Energy, Inc. (the licensee), submitted information summarizing the results of the 2015 steam generator (SG) tube inspections performed at Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant (HNP), Unit 1, during the spring 2015 Refueling Outage 19, in accordance with Technical Specification 6.9.1.7 "Steam Generator Tube Inspection Report."

2.0 BACKGROUND

The three Westinghouse (model Delta 75) SGs at HNP were installed in 2001 during Refueling Outage 10. Each SG has 6,307 thermally treated Alloy 690 tubes with a nominal outside diameter of 0.688 inches and a nominal wall thickness of 0.040 inches. The tubes were hydraulically expanded at each end for the full depth of the tubesheet. The tubes are supported by a number of stainless steel tube support plates that have trifoil shaped holes through which the tubes pass. Below the support plates is a flow distribution baffle plate that has octafoil shaped holes. The tubes in rows 1 through 17 (i.e., those with a bend radius less than 12 inches) received a supplemental thermal treatment (stress relieving) after bending.

3.0 EVALUATION The licensee provided the scope, extent, methods, and results of their SG tube inspections in the document referenced above. The licensee also described corrective actions in the form of tube plugging and tube stabilization taken in response to the inspection findings.

4.0 CONCLUSION

Based on a review of the information provided, the staff concludes that the licensee provided the information required by their technical specifications. In addition, the staff concludes that there are no technical issues that warrant follow-up action at this time since the inspections appear to be consistent with the objective of detecting potential tube degradation and the inspection results appear to be consistent with industry operating experience at similarly designed and operated units.
