SUMMARY

OF TELEPHONE CONFERENCE CALL ON REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION SEVERE ACCIDENT MITIGATION ALTERNATIVES PERTAINING TO THE BYRON AND BRAIDWOOD NUCLEAR STATIONS LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION January 2, 2014 The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff and representatives of Exelon Generation Company, LLC (Exelon or the applicant) held a telephone conference call on January 2, 2014, to discuss the request for additional information (RAis) regarding the severe accident mitigation alternatives (SAMAs) for Byron and Braidwood Nuclear Stations license renewal application (LRA). The telephone conference call was useful in clarifying the RAis.

Discussion The staff and the applicant discussed the current draft RAis sent to the applicant on December 18, 2013, (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS)

Accession No. ML13351A517) concerning the LRA and the SAMA review. On December 23, 2013, the applicant requested clarification regarding RAI No. 4, subpart L:

It is noted that both the internal events and total (internal + external events) MACR

[maximum averted cost-risk] for both Byron and Braidwood are generally significantly greater than the MACRs for other SAMA submittals. Provide a discussion of the major contributors/factors that lead to this result and provide an assessment of the realism or conservatism of these factors.

Specifically, the applicant requested clarification of the scope of the question and which specific SAMAs are included in the question, as written.

The discussion focused on what information the apparently large MACR results and the associated impact on the potentially cost-beneficial SAMAs. As a result of the discussion, the staff is revising the RAI question as follows:

Provide a discussion of the major contributors/factors that lead to the apparently large MACR and a qualitative assessment of the realism or conservatism of these factors.
