License Renewal Review Overview Safety Review Focuses on the aging effects of components and structures important to plant safety Staff review is to determine whether aging effects will be effectively managed Considers generic and site specific operating experience related to the effects of aging Environmental Review Considers, analyzes, and discloses environmental impacts of continued plant operation and alternatives to license renewal Staff review is to determine if the environmental impacts of license renewal are so great that license renewal would be unreasonable 7

Waste Confidence
> NRC Waste Confidence Rule (WC) addresses the environmental impacts of continued storage of spent fuel after the licensed life (including renewal).
SConsistent with the Commission direction, Byron renewed licenses will not be issued until the issues related to waste confidence are appropriately addressed.
SWC Generic Environmental Impact Statement is being developed by the WC directorate, to be completed in 2014.
