NOTICE OF AVAILABILITY OF THE DRAFT PLANT-SPECIFIC SUPPLEMENT 55 TO THE GENERIC ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT FOR LICENSE RENEWAL OF NUCLEAR PLANTS REGARDING BRAIDWOOD STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2 (TAC NOS. MF1832, MF1833, MF1792, AND MF1793)
Dear Mr. Gallagher:
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff has completed the draft plant-specific Supplement 55 to NUREG-1437, Generic Environmental Impact Statement for License Renewal of Nuclear Plants (GElS), regarding the renewal of operating licenses NPF-72 and NPF-77 for an additional 20 years of operation for Braidwood Station, Units 1 and 2 (Braidwood). Enclosed is a copy of the draft supplement. The notice advises the public that the draft supplement is publicly available at the NRC public document room or from the NRCs Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS), and can be found at Accession No. ML15020A390. ADAMS is accessible from the NRC website at http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams.html. The accession number for draft Supplement 55 to the GElS is ML15062A428. In addition, the Fossil Ridge Library, 386 W. Kennedy Road, Braidwood, Illinois 60408, has agreed to make the draft supplement available.
As discussed in Chapter 5 of the draft supplement, the preliminary recommendation is that the adverse environmental impacts of license renewal for Braidwood are not great enough to deny the option of license renewal for energy-planning decisionmakers. This recommendation is based on: (1) the analysis and findings in the GElS; (2) Exelon Generation Company, LLCs (Exelon) environmental report; (3) consultation with Federal, state, local, and tribal agencies; (4) the staff's own independent review; and (5) the staff's consideration of public comments received during the scoping process.
Public meetings to discuss the findings of the draft supplemental environmental impact statement (SEIS) will be held on April 21, 2015, at the Godley Park District, 500 S. Kankakee Street, Godley, Illinois 60407. The first session will convene at 2:00 p.m. and will continue until 4:00 p.m., as necessary. The second session will convene at 7:00 p.m. and will continue until 9:00 p.m., as necessary. An NRC meeting notice will be published to provide more details about these public meetings.
A separate Notice of Availability of the draft SEIS will be placed in the Federal Register through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
