o UNITED STATES j ~NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D. C. 20555 November 8, 1984 Docket No. 50-206 LSO5-84-11-006 LICENSEE:

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EDISON COMPANY FACILITY:

SAN ONOFRE NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION, UNIT NO. 1

SUBJECT:

OCTOBER 26, 1984 MEETING ON ENVIRONMENTAL QUALIFICATION OF ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT On October 26, 1984, members of the NRC staff and consultants met with representatives of Southern California Edison Company, licensee-for San Onofre Unit 1, in Bethesda, Maryland. A list of attendees is enclosed.

The meeting was a followup to the electrical equipment qualification audit held on October 2 through 4, 1984; the results of this audit were trans mitted by separate correspondence.

As a result of the audit, the staff identified actions for the licensee to undertake regarding the need for the licensee to provide justifications for continued operation (JCOs) for equipment which will not be fully qualified prior to plant return to service.

Specifically, the staff requested during the audit that the JCOs be updated to specifically address the provisions of 10 CFR 50.49(i).

At the meeting, the licensee presented revised JCOs which factored in the staff audit findings.

In particular, the two major concerns identified in the audit, Viking penetrations and cables listed as "various", were discussed.

The licensee has prepared revised JCOs for the Viking penetration which consider the functions served by the penetrations, test reports from similar penetrations and the time period in which affected circuits are required to act.

Since the audit, the licensee has completed docufnentation searches to match cable manufacturers to cabling used in safety-related applications. Therefore, the category previously listed as "various" has-been eliminated. JCOs are in place for each of the cable types. Based on the information discussed at the meeting, the staff is satisfied that the problems identified during the audit are being resolved. The licensee has agreed to submit revised JCOs in the near future.
