RIV000095 Submitted: December 22, 2011 Groundwater Investigation

'06 Quarter 4 Activities and Results

  • We continued to install new monitoring wells as Phase 2A of the program to test the groundwater under the site including four wells on the waterfront along the Unit 1 and Unit 2 Turbine buildings. We have a total of 3 5 new wells on site. This phase of the project is complete. Well sampling is ongoing.
  • Demineralizer Results:

The latest sample results from the down gradient

  • The Unit 1 spent fuel pool demineralizer system wells (MW-49 and MW-removed about 98% ofthe Sr-90 activity in the pool. 50) have shown a 5-10 fold reduction in Sr-90 levels.
  • Radiological Environmental Monitoring Program fish * '06 Fall Fish Samples samples obtained from the Hudson River came back obtained from the Hudson non-detectable for Sr-90 for the spring of '06. River 20 -25 miles north of Indian Point collected for IPEC are showing low levels of Sr-90. Samples collected by the NRC are showing no levels and DEC results have not been returned We believe our findings are background readings.
  • Entergy and the Indian Point Energy Center hosted an open house to present information about the
  • A similar event was held ongoing groundwater investigation activities on for the Nuclear Committee of Entergy's Thursday, October 5 between 4 -8 p.m. Experts on Board of Directors on the groundwater investigation, radiation health October 17 effects and high resolution video inspection were available to explain the program and answer questions.
  • Remediation Pilot Test: The groundwater investigation team conducted a pump test to determine if a recovery well, could be used to hydraulically prevent the migration of tritiated groundwater around the Unit 2 Fuel Building. The IPEC00063899

test is also designed to test the feasibility of pumping groundwater from the area near IP2. The

  • RW-1, located in the Unit 2 Fuel Storage Building test did indicate that water could be drawn from (FSB) around Unit 2 without drawing Sr-90 contaminated water from Unit 1. The RW-1 well pumping did influence water in the Unit 2 Transformer Yard (MW-34) as expected. Sampling from the monitoring wells has resumed.
  • The leak collection box installed at the Unit 2 spent fuel pool continues to show essentially no water coming from the crack on the southwest wall. In December 375 ml of water was collected in 4 weeks.
  • As part of the investigation of structures and systems on site, the team has examined storm drains.

Inspection and cleaning is complete. Unit 1 drain system has spread contamination to the Unit 3 site.

  • The dye tracer tests, which are designed to help characterize flow direction and velocity near the Unit 1 and Unit 2 pools, will begin in early February 07.
  • Entergy will begin non-destructive testing in February ofthe IP2 spent fuel pool transfer canal to determine if any areas identified on the video inspection are potential through-wall leaks IPEC00063900
