Subject:

Tritium Plume at Braidwood Plant in Illinois - Likely got off site into resident's water wells I just spoke to Region III HP personnel (HP Branch Chief, Steve Orth and HP Specialist, John House) about a call they received from Braidwood plant. The licensee has monitored "large" concentrations (no values given yet) of tritium on site. The plume is traveling towards the site boundary. The licensee added that they believe that the plume has likely already gotten off site. They have installed onsite monitoring wells to obtain detailed information about the plume. They are also attempting to sample local water wells, but need each resident's permission.

Region III is sending an HP Specialist to the site tomorrow morning. The NRC Resident Inspector is involved.

Region III will be issuing a PN as soon as some real data is available, they are working with their OPA people.

Region III is calling the EDO Regional Coordinator.

Region III will keep me copied on e-mails on this topic.

The State of Illinois will be involved (they are an EPA Agreement State).

This may be our first case of an actual plume getting off site.
