Description:

During excavation of Unit 2 Fuel Storage Building loading bay area in support of the dry cask storage project, a hole opened up in the soil beneath the east loading bay cinder-block wall. This does NOT effect the integrity of the spent fuel pool, which is a separate structure. The cinder-block wvall remains structurally sound because it is supported by coulmn-to-column beams.

Immediate Action

Description:

Evaluated by structural engineer as not a structural integrity issue for the Fuel Storage Building or Spent Fuel Pool, for same reasons as documented in CR-IP2-2005-3424-CA-2 operability evaluation. Notified Shift Manager, Plant Manager, Safety, HP, Security, Site Executive. Directed opening to be covered immediately with heavy steel plate and tarp to effect security and rainwater interim corrective measures.

Suggested Action

Description:

Excavation on the loading bay side will need to continue as scheduled to the point the bedrock at the 51-foot level is exposed, then the condition will be frepaired. This condition is caused by the soil under the ivall not having been compacted when the building was originally constructed.
