Exit Interview The inspection scope and findings were summarized on October 3, 1979, with those persons indicated in Paragraph 1 above.

Unresolved Items Unresolved items were not identified during this inspection.
5.
Independent Inspection The purpose of this inspection was to examine diesel generator (DG) 1A and IB.
The licensee advised RII Octnher 1, 1979, that a 7 inch rainfall had occurred September 29-30, 1979. Thir. resulted in flooding of diesel gen-erator rooms IA and IB.
The water entered these rooms through the electrical conduits which extended from the diesel generator rooms through several manholes located outside the building. The phase of construction is such that the sump pumps in the manholes were not operational, all the cables had not been installed, and the conduits had not been sealed. The water reached a height of 41 inches on IA diesel engine and generator and 8 1/4 inches on the engine and generator of IB.
Various auxiliary components were partially or completely submerged.
The DG supplier had been contacted and a preliminary examination had been made by the vendors service engineers. The inspector reviewed the prelimi-nary report which stated that the water did not reach any machine parts such as main bearings, crankshaft or connecting rods and bearings.
The report recommended cleaning around th-crankshaft seals and spraying the shaft with a rust preventative. The oil in the pedestal bearings should be drained and replaced with new oil. The base of the engines are to be wiped 1443 070

dry and heat applied to the base to remove moisture. Later the crankshaft seals will be removed from both engines. The licensee was developing a procedure to accomplish this task using the vendor's recommendations as guide lines for restoring the engines.
The generator manufacturer's inspector was at the site. His recommendations for cleaning the deposits from the generator windings and drying the windings by the application of electrical current were used to develop construction -
procedures Nos. 390 and 391, Cleaning and Drying Diesel Generator IA and IB, respectively.
The licensee had conducted a room by room inspection. A list of all installed items damaged or possibly damaged was developed as each item was nonconformed.
The nonconforming reports designated the organization within DPC responsible for desposition of each report. The disposition and closure of the noncon-forming reports are controlled by Procedure Q-1, Control of Nonconforming items.
Approximately 38 class A valves were stored in DG room 1A.
These valves have been cleaned of surface residue and nonconformed for further evaluation.
The licensee was taking measures to prevent the recurrance of this flooding.
Within the areas examined, no items of noncompliance or deviations were identified.
