Systematic Assessment of Licensee Performance (SALP) Final Report No. 50-387/86-99; 50-388/86-99 This letter refers to the Systematic Assessment of Licensee Performance (SALP)
of the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station (SSES)
for the period of August 1, 1986 through January 31, 1988, initially forwarded to you by our May 18, 1988 letter (Enclosure 1).
This SALP evaluation was discussed with you and your staff atm mee4ing held on July 7, 1988 (see Enclosure 2 for attendees).
We have reviewed your letter dated July 27, 1988 (Enclosure 3), stating that PP&L does not plan to'ubmit any additional comments on the contents of the SALP report, and herewith transmit the final report (Enclosure 4).
Our overall assessment is that you and your staff continue to operate SSES Units 1 & 2 in a competent and safe manner.
Effective management attention and involvement oriented toward nuclear safety in all functional areas was noted.
Senior management has set clear and well defined standards which provide the necessary direction and guidance to achieve a high level of performance, As identified in the report and discussed with'ou at the SALP meeting, a decline in performance was noted in the areas of Health Physics and Engineering Support.
From your presentations at the meeting and your written response, it appears that you are applying appropriate management attention to these areas.
No reply to this letter is required.
