Observa, tions The inspector visually examined the storage areas in Units 1 and 2 for the components listed above.

Compliance with applicable storage requirements was ascertained for the listed components with the exception of Unit 2 recirculation system valve No. 2F023A.

'

IE combined inspection report number 352 and 353/ 81-04 covering the period of March 2-27, 1981, documents noncompliance number 352/ El-04-02 and 353/ 81-04-01 regarding recirculation system gate valves which were not properly protected.

The inspector found a condition similar to the above such that the end cover for valve 2F0 23A was not attached, the valve interior and the end weld prep was not protected as specified in the General Electric Company specification 22A2724, Revision 3. Paragraph 4.1.2.1.2 of the specification requires that, "... Internal cleanliness of equipment...

shall be maintained by closing openings where possible by plugging, capping and/or sealing....

Butt weld preps on valves...shall have plywood fitted against the prep and tape sealed." The failure to properly protect the recirculation system valve is contrary to 10 CFR

,

50, Appendix B, Criterion V (353/81-07-01).

i Prior to completion of the inspection the licensee representative reported

'

l that the condition was corrected. The inspector verified that the valve end cover was properly attached.

i l

At the exit meeting the licensee representative stated that the item t

would be i... ected more frequently to minimize the possibility for the I

condition to exist in the future.
