Subject: Maine Yankee ALARA Program This refers to 11, 1988 letter (MN 88 82) regarding the Maine Yankee ALARA Program. your AugustThank you for providing us the additional insights into the causes of the recent above industry average annual personnel occupational exposure values at the Maine Yankee Atomic Power Station.
This sup)lements the information documented in our most recent inspection of your ALARA 'rogram (Ref.
Inspection Report No. 50-309/88-12) and the information provided by you during a meeting held at the NRC Region ! Office on April 27, 1988 to discuss the performance of your Radiological Controls Program (Ref. NRC Meeting Summary dated May 17,1988).
We concur that a significant amount of exposure is sustained by personnel at the Maine Yankee Station performing work to improve overall plant reliability and safety.
Your efforts to improve plant reliability and safety is commendable. However, a number of areas for improvement in your ALARA Program were identified and were discussed with you and members of the station Radiological Controls staff.
These included source term reduction, use of mock-ups, improved ALARA goals and dose tracking, improved worker sensitivity to and review of routine work activities from an ALARA and axposure accumulation,between our respective staffs indicate
