of the -Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station for the period. November 1,1985 through January 31,1987;. initially forwarded ' to you - by our Acril:8,11987 letter-(Enclosure 1).
This SALP evaluation was _ discussed with you 'and your staff at a meeting held:in Chiltonville, Massachusetts on May'7, 1f87.- We have reviewed your May 22,1987i: written comments (Enclosure 2) and herewith transmit' the final = report (Enclosure 3).
Our assessment.of your past ' performance noted.some improvement, such as in the area of' emergency preparednessi however, significant recurring program weak--

'nesses were identified' in several functional areas.

ratings were assigned in the radiological controls, surveillance, fire protec-tion., security' and safeguards, and assurance of quality functional areas.

and hardware commitments.to-improve performance in these areas as discussed in

-your May 22, 1987 SALP response and the responses to management meeting 50-293/-
186-41. While we believe your program improvement efforts are beginning to have

a positive effect, we plan.to maintain our increased attention to these areas, through efforts such as our periodic management meetings and increased inspec-tion resource allocation, to ensure that continued improvement is demonstrated.
In accordance 'with 10 CFR 2.790(a), a copy of this letter and its enclosures will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room.
