San Onofre My name is Chrystal Coleman. I live in Vista, 26 miles from San Onofre. I am a mother of 3 daughters. My family has lived in this area for over 5 generations. When the nuclear industry was introduced, 58 years ago, I had no voice in this matter. Today, I am here to speak for MY children, who have no voice in this matter.

I oppose the restart of the defective San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant. EVER. The recent radiation leaks at San Onofre and the subsequent inadequate response do not inspire public confidence that the restart of San Onofre would be safe. I would like to add my voice to thousands of others in the community in the call for a full, transparent Ajudicatory hearing where both the NRC and Southern California Edison are under oath.

Restarting San Onofre is essentially a "nuclear experiment" on the people of Southern California. The risks are too great. The nuclear industry is asking us to risk everything- our family, friends, homes, property, businesses, churches, schools, tourism, local economy, our food and water supply ..... our future generations ....... All for something we don't really need.

Nuclear Radiation is something we can't see, taste or smell. It knows no boundaries.

Exposure to nuclear radiation causes birth defects. It causes cancer. The effects sometimes don't show up until 10 or 20 years after exposure. It alters our DNA so that even if we don't experience it's effects, our children, our grandchildren and even our great-great grandchildren will. Children and developing fetuses are much more susceptible to radioactivity than adults.

I'm sure you know all this.

In 1986 the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant also conducted a "nuclear experiment" which ended in one of the worst nuclear disasters in our history. Millions of peoples' lives ruined, cut short or cut off, with no predictability of the direction the fall out would take or the havoc it would wreak. Contaminated food and water, exclusion zones, children developing any number of health problems prematurely. Families split up. Homes lost. Over $250 million dollars spent in recovery costs alone. Now we have Fukushima ....... Who's next? How many MORE times does it have to happen before we admit that nuclear power was a bad idea and stop perpetuating it? Certainly, we've been told our whole lives to expect" the big one" here in southern California. We can't accurately predict that a large scale earthquake would NEVER happen here. Hasn't a new fault line been discovered nearby? If San Onofre were being built today, would it's license even be granted considering the changes in standards and the lessons learned over the last several decades? Isn't it time to cut our losses and thank our lucky stars?

No matter how regulated the nuclear industry is, no matter how safe the equipment is, no matter how many laws we have in place, we cannot guarantee that there will never be an accident. There is no escape route. No going back.

There is no such thing as safe nuclear energy.

What happened at Chernobyl; and now at Fukushima- is a wake up call. And if we are lucky we can head off our own disaster before it truly is too late for our communities. What we need is a plan of action. A plan that starts by phasing out nuclear power plants immediately, and building up renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. A plan that begins with permanently decommissioning the nuclear plant that holds the worst safety track record in the country- San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.
