Dixie Highway Alert Newport, MI 48166 Site Area Emergency General Emergency Docket No. 50-341 X Not Applicable Subj:ct: AUTHORIZATION FOR FERMI TO INCREASE POWER LEVEL TO 50% -- UPDATE On March 8, 1987, Fermi 2 reached the NRC imposed limit of 50% power. The licensee conuenced pow:r escalation on March 2, 1987, following a shutdown which resulted from problems with the main turbine-generator control system.

The licensee will operate the plant at approximately 50% while conducting testing on the High Pressure Coolant Injection System, the Reactor Water Cleanup System, and the Safety Relief Valves. Following completion of this testing, the licensee plans to conduct the Loss of Off-site Power test and then enter a maintenance outage of approximately 17 days.

The Region III-Fermi Restart Team, along with the Resident Inspectors, have been observing lic:nsee activities throughout the power escalation and will continue to monitor plant operations closely during the planned testing.

The State of Michigan will be notified.
