Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary January 2009

Dear Meghan,

Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for January 2009. In January, we captured twelve (12) Caretta caretta and twelve (12) Chelonia mydas at the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on South Hutchinson Island.

On January 26, a subadult loggerhead was captured and found with a long-line hook embedded in its jaw. This turtle was tr ansported to the Ma rinelife Center in Juno Beach for rehabilitation after consul tation with personnel from FWCC. On January 29 an adult male loggerhead was captured and found to be lethargic and underweight. This turtle was also transport ed to the Marinelife Center in Juno Beach for rehabilitation after consultation with personnel from FWCC. Both incidents were not considered causal to power plant operat ion. All other turtles that were captured in January were released on t he same day of capture.

Tag numbers and morphmetric data for all tu rtles are attached.

Also, attached is a spreadsheet of all captures, mortalities, injuries and causal events delineated by species and month for 2008. This spre adsheet tracks fresh scrapes and will be helpful in determining the success of the intake pipe cleaning project. If you have any questions or comments about the enclos ed data please contact me at your convenience.

Sincerely, Michael J. Bresette Sr. Environmental Specialist Quantum Resources, Inc.
