1.0 INTRODUCTION
The Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station (VCSNS) utilizes a pressurized water reactor rated at 2900 MWT. The maximum dependable capacity is 954 Mwe.
The station is located approximately 26 miles northwest of Columbia, South Carolina.
2.0 OPERATIONAL DATA For the reporting period of January 1 through December 31,1998, the station operated at a capacity factor of 98.0 percent (using maximum dependable capacity) and a unit availability of 98.6 percent. The reactor was critical for a total of 8656.7 hours8.101852e-5 days
0.00194 hours
1.157407e-5 weeks
2.6635e-6 months
, the generator remained on line 2638.5 hours5.787037e-5 days
0.00139 hours
8.267196e-6 weeks
1.9025e-6 months
, and the total gross electrical energy generated for 1998 was 8,508,850 MWH.
3.0 OPERATING
SUMMARY
The Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station (VCSNS) Unit No.1 operated at 100 percent from January 1 through January 2nd, when the plant was shutdown to perform repairs on the "A" Diesel Generator. Plant startup began on January 6th.
Power was restored to 100 percent on January 8th.
VCSNS operated at 100 percent power from January 8 through March 8th, when it was derated to 94 percent to repair a dearerator storage tank telief valve. Power was retumed to 100 percent on March 14th.
VCSNS operated at 100 percent power from March 14 through April 4th. On April 4th, the plant was derated to 87 percent to support testing of the main steam line safety relief valves. Power was retumed to 100 percent on April 4th.
VCSNS operated at 100 percent power from April 4 through May 28th. Power was reduced to 95 percent power on May 28th to support maintenance on the "C" and "D" feedwater booster pumps. Repairs were completed on May 29th and power was restored to 100 percent on May 30th.
VCSNS operated at 100 percent power from May 30 through June 4th, when power was briefly reduced to 97 percent to support the repair of a steam leak at a pressure switch that provides input to the control of the reheater drain tank emergency condenser dump valve. Repairs were completed on June 5th and power was restored to 100 percent.
g l' Annual Operating Report Page 2 of 2 VCSNS operated at 100 percani p c.; . in>m June 5 through July 9th, when power was reduced to 94 percent to support repairs of "D" Feedwater Booster Pump.
! Repairs w ' ere completed and power was restored to 100 percent on July 12th. On July 25th the plant was derated to 76 percent power due to the loss of a circulating l
water pump. Repairs to the pump were completed and power was restored to 100 '
percent on August 9th. 1 VCSNS operated at 100 percent power from August 9 through October 3rd.
l Power was reduced to 94.5 percent to support quarterly control valve testing.
- Power was restored to 100 percent on October 4th. !
'VCSNS operated at 100 percent power from October 4 through December 4th.
The plant was derated to 40 percent power to locate and plug a Condenser tube leak. Once the Water Box was isolated, power was increased to 72 percent. The tube leak was not located and power was restored to 100 percent on December 7th. Power remained at 100 percent until December 22nd. Power was reduced to 95 percent in response to increasing vibration on the 'D' Feedwater Booster Pump.
Power was restored to 100 percent on December 22,1998. The station operated at 100 percent for the remainder of 1998.
Maintenance Attachment I, " Power Reductions Caused by Maintenance Activities," provides !
more detailed information on operating time lost as a result of maintenance activities. ,
l 4.0 EXPOSURES Attachment ll consists of tables which list the r, umber of station, utility, and other personnel (including contract personnel) receiving exposures greate- than 100 i mrem / year and their associated man-rem exposure according to work and job '
function.
5.0 FAILED FUEL VCSNS has not had indication of failed fuel in 1998.
The reactor coolant system specific activity did not exceed the 1.0 microcuries per i gram dose equivalent iodine-131 specific activity or the 100/E microcuries per gram limits of Technical Specification 3.4.8, for this reporting period.
