EXCESSIVE INVENTORY DIFFERENCE (MUF)

On February 24, 1978, the licensee notified Region V (San Francisco) that the inventory difference for Plant I, HTGR process, exceeded the LEMUF limit by a factor greater than 2. The licensee indicated production would be shut down by Friday midnight February 24, 1978. Preparation would then begin for a clean-out inventory scheduled for Tuesday February 28, 1978. An Immediate Action Letter (IAL) was' issued to the licensee on February 24, 1978, confirming the above plans.

Region V inspectors will observe the inventory and take samples to independently test the licensee's measurements.

Media interest is possible because of current public attention to inventory differences. A news release is not planned by the licensee nor the NRC.
