SUBJECT:

MISSING SECURITY DETECTOR CHECK SOURCE General Emergency Not Applicable On July 18, 1985, the licensee telephonically notified Region V that during th'e deactivation of two former guard posts, one of two Special Nuclear Material (SNM) detector check sources, used for routine testing of the SNM detectors at the two stations, was missing and unaccounted for. The licensee initiated an immediate search .of the area, but with no success to date. The search continues. A survey of the security post is also being conducted.

The source is described as a brass cylinder containing about three grams of 93% enriched Uranium 0xide measuring about one half inch diameter by one and one half inches long.

The source was last accounted for at the guard post during a security shift change midafternoon of June 30, 1985.

This Preliminary Notification is issued for information only. The licensee has stated a followup report will be submitted to NRC Region V within 30 days.

Region V received notification of this matter by telephone from the licensee at 10:45 AM, PDT, on July 18, 1985.
