Subject:
AE Pistons
Dear Carl:
At the request of LILC0's Craig Seaman and following a telephone conversation with you, I offer the following insight into the design and development of the AE piston as tested in the prototype RS-V12 engine and as presently installed and tested in the three Shoreham R-48 engines :
Two-piece piston skirt, P/N 03-34'-04-AE, was designed in August,1982 for the R4 and RV-4 series engines as a result of things we had been learning in our R5 prototype development testing. The primary difference between this piston and the current production piston at the time was the elimination of one-half of the Belleville washers in the fastening mechanism between the piston crown and piston skirt, thereby permitting a heavier " beefed-up" skirt stud boss design. The AE piston skirt became known as the " half stack Belleville" design since it required only one-half the previous number of Belleville washers.
Two of the revision 0 pistons were tested in the prototype RS-V12 engine for a total of 687 hours0.00795 days
0.191 hours
0.00114 weeks
2.614035e-4 months
at 514 RPM. Six-hundred-and-twenty-three (623) of these hours were run at and above 300 PSI BMEP (935 BHP / cylinder compared to the Shoreham rating of 610 BHP / cylinder). The corresponding peak cylinder firing pressure is 2000 PSI compared to a Shoreham firing pressure of approximately 1650 PSI. I have attached to this letter a copy of drawing 03-341-04-AE. You will note in the lower left hand corner of the drawing,a table listing revisions made to the drawing since the original release. Of the changes, only revision B was significant in terms of the structural strength and revision B constituted a fairly major revision to the circumferential rib just above the piston pin bore center-line, and also a gusset-type support to the wrist pin boss from the skirt wall just below the pin boss. Revisions A, C, D, E and F are minor dimensional changes made for a variety of non-structural reasons.

Mr. Carl H. Berlinger U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission July 11,1984 Page 2 The revision 0 pistons tested in the RS-V12 operated completely successfully and have been inspected thoroughly by TDI and Failure Analysis Associates people. We have them presently put aside for inspection by you or your consultants should you be interested. The revision E pistons furnished for Shoreham are the beefed-up design common to revision B and later pistons. Incidentally, the pistons furnished to Kodiak, Alaska were also the beefed-up revision B or later design.
In summary, the AE revision 0 pistons were successfully tested in the RS-V12 at _ loads much higher than they would experience in R4 engines, and the revision E drawings furnished for Shorenam incluk , he beefed-up structure, as does the piston used for Failure Analysis Associates' strain gage test work reported earlier. We will be happy to show you or your consultants the actual pistons from the R5 as well as the current production beefed-up version at your convenience.
If you have further questions, please let me hear from you.

C. S. Mathews Vice President and General Manager CSM/pn 1
