July 18, 1988 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE PN0-l!-88-44 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information is as initially received without verifi-cation or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region 11 staff on this date.

Catawba Unit 2 Notification of Unusual Event Docket No. 414 ~~ ~ Alert Rock Hill, South Carolina Site Area Emergency General Emergency X Not Applicable

SUBJECT:

SHUTDOWN EXCEEDING 48 HOURS Catawba Unit 2 connenced a reactor shutdown from 100% power on July 16,1988 per a Technical Specification Action statement associated with the 2A Charging Pump being inoperable. The pump is inoperable due to a mechanical failure. The licensee has detennined that disassembly and replacement of the rotating element will be necessary to repair the pump. The cause of the failure is still under investigation. Unit 2 is currently in Mode 4.

The licensee anticipates plant startup on July 21, 1988. Maintenance in addition to the charging pump replacement is being performed.

Region 11 will perform a routine follow-up.

No media interest is expected.

The NRC received initial notification of this event by telephone from the licensee at 4:11 a.m. (EDT) on on July 17.
