According to the vendor for the H2/02 analyzer catalyst, Comsip, Inc., errors were made in assumptions regarding iodine concentrations that would exist in the reactor

! containnent of a 3000 megawatt reactor under the worst case conditions during a Ioss

! of Coolant Accident (IOCA) . As a result, the design of the standard (original) catalyst would produce hydrogen readings lower than those that would actually exist in containnent at that time.

Subsequently, Consip, Inc., has developed a modified catalyst capable of operating in lj the H2 02 analyzers under the worst canditions. The modified catalysts have been pur-

+

chased from Consip and installed in the H /02 2 Containment Atmosphere bbnitoring System Analyzers for both Units 1 and 2. As a result of this modification, stabilization time

, has increased fran five (5) minutes to eight (8) lurs before the analyzers zero ad-l justment can be performed. The time required before the analyzers calibration can be

performed has increased frun five (5) minutes to fourty-five (45) minutes. Neither )

changes affect the safe operation of the Susquehanna steam Electric Station since pro-l cedures require one of the two H202 analyzers in the Containment Atmosphere hbnitoring

Systan at each Unit to be in the " Analyze" node durirg plant operation with the second

! in " Standby". 'Ihe applicable procedures have been modified to reflect the changes in i H2 /02 anal.yzer stabilization and calibration times.

Unit 1 was shutdown for the tie-in cutage with Unit 2 when the nodification to the analyzers was identified and performed. There were no adverse consequences to public health and safety.

4-001-01. 'Ihis event was

- determined to be reportable per 10CE'R, Part 50.73(a) (2) (v), in that it was learned that the catalyst in the H2/02 analyzer for the Contairment 1 Atmosphere systcm may have difficulty resisting iodine poisoning during i

a Ioss of Coolant Accident (IOCA) . The H2 /02 catalysts have been replaced with modified catalysts capable of withstanding iodine poisoning.
