ALABAMA POWER COMPANY ) Docket No. 50-348 (Farley Nuclear Plant, )

Unit No. 1)

)

ANSWER OF ALABAMA POWER COMPANY TO SHOW CAUSE ORDER DATED JANUARY 2, 1980 In answer to the Show Cause Order dated January 2,1980, issued by Harold R. Denton, Director, Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation, Alabama Power Company states as follows:

1. Alabama Power Company has complied, at its Farley Nuclear Plant, Unit No.1, with all of the " category A" short-term lessons learned items identified in NUREG-0578 referenced in the Show Cause Order except for two of such items.

The two remaining items to be completed are (a) install-ation of a primary coolant saturation meter, and (b) install-ation of pressurizer safety valve position indicators. These items have not been completed because of unavailability of necessary material and equipment.

1792 087

2. Alabama Power Company has recently received the last of the equipment and materials necessary for the installation of the primary coolant saturation meter. Alabama Power Company has not yet received all of the material and equipment necessary for installation of the pressurizer safety valva position 80012 30 E b

indicators. At shown in the attached schedule, the last of the equipment necesssry for such installation is due to be received on January 30, 1930. In addition, this schedule indicates an effort is underway to modify the ' te manufacturer's generically approved brackets for the limit switches in order to meet space requirements for the Farley Nuclear Plant by January 30, 1980.

Alabama Power Company has scheduled a shutdown on Farley Nuclear Plant Ur.it No.1 for January 31, 1980, in order to complete these two remaining items.

3. Alabama Power Company is using all practical means to expedite the delivery of the material and equipment necessary for installation of the position indicators. However, should receipt of the material for the position indicators be delayed beyond the scheduled delivery dates, or modification to the brackets not be completed by the projected date, Alabama Power Company respectfully requests an extension of time for the start of shutdown of the Farley Nuclear Plant Unit No.1 beyond January 31, 1980 on a day to day basis for a period of time up to thirty (30) days. In such event, Alabama Power Company would commit to commence shutdown of the unit within forty-eight (48) hours of the receipt of the last of the material required for installation of the position indicators or upon successful modification of the brackets. If such required material is not received by March 1, 1980, Alabama Power Company would further commit to shutdown Farley Nuclear Plant Unit No.1 at that time to install the saturation meter. This would entail a 1792 088 subsequent shutdown for installation of the position indicators after the material had been received. Such subsequent shutdown for install-ation of such position indicators would be scheduled to occur within

thirty (30) days after the receipt of the last of the material required for such installation but in any event, not later than June 1, 1980. In the event this request for extension is granted, Alabama Power Company would, of course, keep tiRC advised on the problems associated with delivery of equipment and materials and the steps being taken to overcome such problems.

Respectfully submitted, ALABAMA POWER C0tiPANY By S WCia bn
