Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary October 2019

Dear Meghan,

Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for October 2019. This month we captured nine Caretta caretta and 28 Chelonia mydas in the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. No sea turtles were sent for rehabilitation this month; however, there was one causal mortality. As with all sea turtle strandings at the Saint Lucie Plant, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) was consulted and stranding forms were filed with the state through the Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network.

There was one causal mortality this month. On October 13th, a fresh dead subadult loggerhead was removed from the permanent 5-inch barrier net. The turtle was emaciated with heavy barnacle and epibiont coverage. The turtle was placed on ice and taken to Dr. Nancy Mettee, DVM for necropsy and causality determination. Although the turtle was in very poor condition prior to being encountered at the power plant, it most likely drowned during entrainment and was therefore deemed causal. "Based on post mortem examination there were a number of chronic, debilitating diseases present in this turtle, any of which could have resulted in death. Ultimately, mortality is causal to plant activity due to forced submergence, however this turtle was greatly compromised by other diseases."

The primary 5-inch barrier net encountered negligible amounts of algae throughout the month. A 30-day planned power plant outage began mid-month. Even still, the primary barrier net has performed as designed and no turtles have been observed beyond the 5- inch net.

The tag numbers and morphometric data for all turtles captured during the month have been included with this report (see attachments/addendums). Also included is a spreadsheet for all captures, mortalities, injuries, and causal events delineated by species and by month for 2019. In addition, this spreadsheet tracks fresh scrapes incurred on captured turtles for the current month, as well as the entire year.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Sincerely, Steve
