SUBJECT:

OYSTER CREEK NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION - ANNUAL ASSESSMENT OF SAFETY PERFORMANCE

Dear Mr. Crowley:

I would like to personally invite you and other members of your organization to attend a meeting between the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and AmerGen Energy Company, LLC, in which the NRC staff will discuss with AmerGen our annual assessment of the safety performance of Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station.

The meeting will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, May 12, 2005, at the Ocean County Administration Building, Room 119, 101 Hooper Ave., Toms River, NJ. At the meeting we will briefly discuss our Reactor Oversight Process and then discuss with AmerGen our assessment of their safety performance at Oyster Creek and their response to our assessment. The meeting is open to the public for observation. Following the presentation, the NRC staff will be available to answer questions from you and members of the public regarding the safety performance of Oyster Creek and the role of the NRC in ensuring safe plant operations. Please feel free to contact me in advance if there are any particular topics of interest that you would like to discuss at the meeting.

The NRC recently completed its annual assessment of the safety performance of Oyster Creek Station in accordance with the NRC Reactor Oversight Process. Our assessment used the most recent performance indicator data and inspection findings from January 1, 2004 through December 31, 2004. We described our assessment results in a letter to AmerGen on March 2, 2005. A copy of that letter is enclosed along with the NRCs meeting notice with attached meeting agenda. The draft slides for the meeting can be located in the NRC's online document system (ADAMS) with Accession Number ML050980082. ADAMS is accessible from the NRC Web Site at: http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams.html.

You can also become familiar with our Reactor Oversight Process, the information we used in our annual assessment, and the specific safety performance at Oyster Creek through the NRC Web site. This information may be accessed at:
