Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary May 2008

Dear Meghan,

Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for May 2008.

In May, we captured twenty four (24) Caretta caretta, and twenty (20) Chelonia mydas at the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on South Hutchinson Island.

In May, two loggerheads were sent to rehabilitation facilities after consultation with FWCC personnel. The compromised condition of these turtles was not causal to power plant operation. One of these loggerheads was underweight and lethargic, and the other had severe propeller wounds on the carapace. Causal and non-causal determinations are made in consultation with FWCC personnel. All other turtles captured in May were released back to the ocean on the same day of capture.

Work on the permanent primary barrier net was completed on May 6 and the temporary net was removed. Tag numbers and morphmetric data for all turtles are attached. Also, attached is a spreadsheet of all captures, mortalities, injuries and causal events delineated by species and month for 2008. This spreadsheet tracks fresh scrapes and will be helpful in determining the success of the intake pipe cleaning project. 13. Adult female. Tail length = 260 mm.
14. Recapture. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 9/16/99, 9/19/01, 9/1/02, 6/24/03, 11/24/04, 4/9/05, 9/7/05, 4/10/06, 5/2/06, 8/24/06 and 4/18/07.
15. Adult female. Tail length = 210 mm.
16. Recapture. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 12/10/05, 9/21/06, 12/18/06, 4/21/07 and 12/6/07.
17. Turtle found underweight and lethargic with no wounds or abnormalities. Held overnight for transport to Marinelife Center on 5/27/08. Not causal to power plant operation.
18. Recapture. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 10/17/01, 5/5/03, 6/1/03, 6/18/03, 7/23/03, 10/4/03, 11/7/03, 7/9/05, 10/3/05, 1/26/06, 9/12/06, 7/1/07, 9/1/07 and 4/18/08.
19. Adult female. Tail length = 214 mm.
20. Adult female. Deep propeller wounds to mid and posterior carapace which appear relatively fresh. Transported to Marinelife Center by FWC. Not causal to power plant operation.
21. Adult female. Tail length = 233 mm.
22. Recapture. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 9/23/04, 8/11/06, 8/23/06, 9/30/06, 3/6/07, 8/19/07, 12/3/07, 1/14/08, 2/21/08, 3/19/08 and 5/5/08.
