Dear Ms. Jackson:

SMALL BUSINESS lh:PO ...........

... T It has been brought to my attention that materials used for fire protection on site at the Salem Nuclear Power Station may not meet Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) fire safety standards.

As other issues related to fire safety at Salem have been of concern to me in the past, I would.like to inquire* about any recent regulations or actions taken byNRC that could affect, in any way, the manner in which this issue is addressed.

Specifically, I am interested in learning the history of this issue, whether information provided to ine by the Coalition for Peace and Justice (copy enclosed)

--a group of concerned citizens in my district -is accurate, and what steps your agency may have already taken to nullify any potential threat caused by non-approved fire protection materials.

In addition, I would like to know when the operator of the plant, Public Service Electric l and (PSE&G), discovered this problem, and reported it to NRC. Could such a problem

  • affect the surrounding community?

If this issue was brought to the attention of the NRC before ' the re-start of Unit I, I would like know the manner in which the correction of such a problem would fit into the overall scheme of a Confirmatory Action Letter (CAL). Finally, in light of the NRC's recent announcement suspending Systematic Assessment of Licensee Performance reports, I would like to know if the public dissemination of fire safety issues is affected in any way. Thank you for your time an consideration with these questions.

If you haye any questions, please feel free to contact Craig Montesano in my Washington office. I look forward to your reply: Sincerely, ------------------
