Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary June 2008

Dear Meghan,

Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for June 2008. In June, we captured thirty one (31) Caretta caretta, and eleven (11) Chelonia mydas at the intake canal of the St.

Lucie power plant on South Hutchinson Island. During June, one loggerhead was sent to a rehabilitation facility after consultation with FWCC personnel. The compromised condition of this turtle was not causal to power plant operation. However, an adult female loggerhead was captured in June that sustained severe scrapes to the nares region (nostrils) of the head. This injury was causal to power plant operation. While this injury was not considered life threatening this turtle would have been sent to a rehabilitation facility if she had not been gravid. So, after consultation with stranding personnel at FWCC, this turtle was released back to the ocean. All other turtles captured in June were released back to the ocean on the same day of capture.

Tangle nets were not set on June 19, 20, 21 and 22 due to heavy influxes of algae, although we were still able to hand capture turtles. Divers cleaned the algae from the primary barrier net on June 25, 26 and

27. Tag numbers and morphmetric data for all turtles are attached.

Also, attached is a spreadsheet of all captures, mortalities, injuries and causal events delineated by species and month for 2008. This spreadsheet tracks fresh scrapes and will be helpful in determining the success of the intake pipe cleaning project. If you have any questions or comments about the enclosed data please contact me at your

convenience.

Sincerely, Michael J. Bresette Sr. Environmental 2 Specialist Quantum Resources, Inc.
