SPECIAL REPORT EMERGENCY DIESEL GENERATORS SALEM GENERATING STATION UNIT NQ. 1 DOCKET NO. 50-272 Salem Generating Station Technical Specification

4. 8 .1.1. 4 requires that all diesel generator failures, valid or non-valid, be reported to the Commission in a Special Report pursuant to Specification 6.9.2 within 30 days. On June 1, 1995, Salem Unit No. 1 experienced a valid failure of the lB diesel generator.

On June 2, 1995 the diesel generator was repaired and returned to service. On June 7, 1995, Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) identified that the failure of lB diesel generator was a potential common mode failure and reportable in accordance with 10CFR50.73.

The Special Report for a diesel failure (Technical Specification 4.8.1.1.4) will not be submitted within the required 30 days; PSE&G's decision *to combine the Special Report with the Licensee Event Report (LER) shorted the time required to complete the LER. Because the root cause of the failure was more complex than expected, PSE&G was unable to complete the LER in the time frame required by the Special Report. The LER will be submitted within the 30 day (July 7, 1995) requirements of 10CFR50.73.
