Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for January 2023. This month we captured one Lepidochelys olivacea, four Caretta caretta, and 36 Chelonia mydas in the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. There were no mortalities or sea turtles sent for rehabilitation this month. | Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for January 2023. On January 5th, a smalltooth sawfish (Pristis pectinata) became entangled in the turtle capture nets at the St. Lucie Power Plant intake canal. Additional resources from IRG, FPL, and Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute (HBOI) were called in to assist with the removal. Removal was completed according to the Smalltooth Sawfish Handling, Transportation, and Release Protocols (FPL 2007) and smalltooth sawfish on-site training (2016). The smalltooth sawfish was a female with a total length of 387.2 cm and an estimated weight of 150 kg. The animal was in good condition. Tissue samples were collected, and tags were applied by HBOI biologists under NMFS permit 25864. It was successfully released into the ocean adjacent to the intake canal beach access. Thereafter, IRG biologists monitored the three-mile stretch of beach near the release site for any possible delayed impacts on the captured smalltooth sawfish for seven days. The incidental take limit established by the 2022 Biological Opinion set forth by NMFS is three non-lethal captures (take) of U.S. Distinct Population Segment smalltooth sawfish every three years. | On January 5th, a smalltooth sawfish (Pristis pectinata) became entangled in the turtle capture nets at the St. Lucie Power Plant intake canal. Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary January 2023
Dear Meghan,
Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for January 2023. This month we captured one Lepidochelys olivacea, four Caretta caretta, and 36 Chelonia mydas in the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. There were no mortalities or sea turtles sent for rehabilitation this month.
The primary 5-inch barrier net encountered only negligible amounts of algae in January. Altogether, the primary barrier net has performed as designed and no turtles have been observed beyond the 5inch net.
The tag numbers and morphometric data for all turtles captured during the month have been included with this report (see attachments/addendums). Also included is a spreadsheet for all captures, mortalities, injuries, and causal events delineated by species and by month for 2023. In addition, this spreadsheet tracks fresh scrapes incurred on captured turtles for the current month, as well as the entire year.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
Sincerely, Annessia
