July 2010 Canal Captures correction

Dear Megan,

Attached is the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for July 2010. In July, Inwater Research Group biologists captured twenty-nine(CORRECTION) (29) Caretta caretta and three (3) Chelonia mydas at the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. During the month there were no mortalities and one turtle was transported to a rehabilitation facility. On July 23rd a sub-adult loggerhead was hand captured floating near the barrier net with three large prop wounds exposing the internal organs. This turtle was transported to the Marinelife Center in Juno Beach after consultation with personnel from FWCC. This incident was determined to be non-causal to power plant operation.

Throughout the month of July the temporary barrier net experienced light loads of algae that entered into the intake canal. This temporary barrier net has effectively kept turtles from moving further down the canal. A permanent fix to this net is expected in 2011. Underwa ter Engineering Service Inc. (UESI) had previously been cleaning the temporary net and finished the cleaning in the first week of July.

The tag numbers and morphometric data for all the turtles is attached. Also attached is the spreadsheet of all captures, mortalities, injuries, and causal events delineated by species and month/year to date for 2010. This spreadsheet also includes and tracks fresh scrapes incurred on captured turtles for the month of July, which includes totals and percentages. If you any questions please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely, David Clark Inwater Research Group, Inc.
