SUBJECT:

UPDATE ON SHUTDOWN DJE TO DAMAGED DIESEL GENERATOR BEARING This PN updates PN0-II-87-15, issued March 6, h M7 Tha licensee reports that inspection of the journal bearing on the 1-B diesel generator, which led to an unscheduled shutdown of Unit 1, revealed no damage, unusual wear, or indications of excessive temperatures. The inspection was conducted by the licensee and th3 vendor, Transamerica Delaval. The bearing was refurbished anyway.

The cause of two high bearing temperature trips has been attributed to the failure of California Controls (CALCON) eutectic type temperature sensors in which solder, designed to melt at 228 degrees (F), melted prematurely due to the metallurgic composition of the solder.

The high bearing temperature trip function would be bypassed during emergency operation of the engine.

The diesel generator was successfully tested on March 9, and the Unit is being prepared for return to service.

Unit 2 was unaffected.

The State of South Carolina has been informed.

This PN is being issued for information purposes only.
