Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary March 2015

==Dear Meghan,==
==Dear Meghan,==

Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for March 2015. This month, we captured forty-two (42) Caretta caretta, thirty (30) Chelonia mydas, three (3) Lepidochelys kempii, and one (1) Dermochelys coriacea in the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. Two sea turtle were sent for rehabilitation and there were two mortalities recorded during the month of March. As with all sea turtle strandings at the Saint Lucie Plant (alive or dead), the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) was consulted and a stranding form was filed with the state through the Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network.

There were two sea turtles that were sent to rehabilitation facilities for non-causal injuries this month. On March 12th, a subadult loggerhead was captured that had an old boat strike inju ry to its posterior carapace.
Although healing, a significant portion of the wound (25 cm long) remain ed open and necrotic. The turtle was also missing 80% of its right front flipper (healed). FWC transported the animal to Sea World in Orlando for rehabilitation. On March 27 th, a large subadult loggerhead with extensive shark attack injuries was removed from the intake canal. The turtle was missing 70% of both front flippers and had gashes in the right axilla and left rear flipper. There were also shark bite marks/puncture wounds in th e anterior carapace, plastron and neck.
Inwater Research Group biologists transported the animal partway to the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach. After careful consideration, th e staff veterinarian recommended that the turtle be humanely euthanized.
Both of these live strandings were not considered causal to power plant operations.

There were two non-causal mortalities during the month of March. On March 6 th, a fresh dead juvenile green turtle was found on the 5-inch barrier net. The turtle had an apparent boat strike injury to the right side of its head; the skull was fractured. The remains were saved for necropsy by Dr. Nancy Mettee, DVM and the necropsy findings were consistent with the conclusion of a non-causal mortality. On March 17 th, a moderately decomposed juvenile green turtle was found floating at the surface of the new barrier net. The turtle was missing its left rear flipper from a recent injury. There were no other wounds or abnormalities present. After consultation with FWC, it was determined that both of th ese sea turtle mortalities were not causal to power plant operations.

2Net inspections were also performed during the month of March. On March 11 th, UESI performed the quarterly net inspections on the barrier nets within the intake canal system (specifically, the 5-inch; 8-inch A-1-A; and 10-inch U.I.D.S. nets). No holes were unc overed during the quarter ly net inspection.

Throughout the month, the permanent 5-inch barrier net experienced light loads of algae and jellyfish that entered into the intake canal system. A scheduled short-term power plan t outage began on March 22 nd. Consequently, flow rates in the canal system have abated considerably. In addition, baseline water levels in the intake canal have risen due to the reduced flow rates as some of the circulation pumps were powered down for the outage. Even still, the new barrier net has performed as designed a nd no turtles have be en observed beyond the 5-inch net.

The tag numbers and morphometric data for all turtles captured during the month have been included with this report (see attachments/addendums). Also included is a spreadsheet for all captures, mortalities, injuries, and causal events delineated by species and by month for 2015. In addition, this spreadsheet also tracks fresh scrapes incurred on captured turtles for the current month, as well as the entire year. An additional Excel spreadsheet tracks all causal injuries and mortalities in curred by sea turtles at the St. Lucie Plant since 2002.

Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary March 2015

Dear Meghan,

Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for March 2015. This month, we captured forty-two (42)

Caretta caretta, thirty (30)

Chelonia mydas, three (3)

Lepidochelys kempii

, and one (1)

Dermochelys coriacea in the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutc hinson Island.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Sincerely,

Steve
