Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for March 2017. This month, we captured eight (8) Caretta caretta and three (3) Chelonia mydas in the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. One sea turtle was sent for rehabilitation and there was one mortality recorded during the month of March. As with all sea turtle strandings at the Saint Lucie Plant (alive or dead), the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) was consulted and a stranding form was filed with the state through the Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network.

There was one loggerhead sea turtle sent for rehabilitation for non-causal injuries this month. On March 17th, an emaciated and lethargic subadult loggerhead was removed from the primary 5-inch barrier net. The plastron was deeply sunken in and ventral measurements were not taken due to the animal's condition. The FWC stranding coordinator transported the turtle to the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach for rehabilitation. This stranding was considered non-causal.

There was one non-causal green turtle mortality this month. On March 10 th, a moderately decomposed juvenile green turtle was found floating in th e intake canal during a routine power plant outage. The scales were sloughing off, there was a reddish purple discoloration of the ventral extremities due to postmortem blood pooling, and the carcass was foul. No other wounds or other abnormalities were noted. The turtle was too decomposed to necropsy; however, FWC was consulted and the animal was judged to have been entrained postmortem.

There was a brief period of severe algae entrainment during the month. Otherwise, the permanent 5-inch barrier net experienced only negligible loads of algae and jellyfish that entered into the intake canal system. Inwater Research Group biologists performed around the clock monitoring of the in take canal for a one week period following the algae intrusion event. Overall, the barrier net has performed as designed and no turtles have been observed beyond the 5-inch net. Bathymetric surveys of the intake and discharge canals were completed in March. Furthermore, the 30-day power pl ant refueling outage that began in late February concluded towards the end of this month.

2The tag numbers and morphometric data for all turtles captured during the month have been included with this report (see attachments/addendums). Also included is a spreadsheet for all captures, mortalities, injuries, and causal events delineated by species and by month for 2017. In addition, this spreadsheet tracks fresh scrapes incurred on captured turtles for the current month, as well as the entire year. An additional Excel spreadsheet tracks all causal injuries and mo rtalities incurred by sea turtles at the St. Lucie Plant since 2004.

Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary March 2017

Dear Meghan,

On March 10th, a moderately decomposed juvenile green turtle was found floating in the intake canal during a routine power plant outage.

Inwater Research Group biologists performed around the clock monitoring of the intake canal for a one week period following the algae intrusion event. Overall, the barrier net has performed as designed and no turtles have been observed beyond the 5-inch net. Bathymetric surveys of the intake and discharge canals were completed in March. Furthermore, the 30-day power plant refueling outage that began in late February concluded towards the end of this month.

The tag numbers and morphometric data for all turtles captured during the month have been included with this report (see attachments/addendums). Also included is a spreadsheet for all captures, mortalities, injuries, and causal events delineated by species and by month for 2017. In addition, this spreadsheet tracks fresh scrapes incurred on captured turtles for the current month, as well as the entire year. An additional Excel spreadsheet tracks all causal injuries and mortalities incurred by sea turtles at the St. Lucie Plant since 2004.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Sincerely, Steve Steve Weege Sr. Environmental Specialist Inwater Research Group, Inc.

NOTES

1. DEAD (NON-CAUSAL MORTALITY). Stranding# STW170310-01. Moderately decomposed juvenile green turtle found floating in the intake canal during a power plant outage. Scales were sloughing off, there was a reddish purple discoloration of the ventral extremities due to postmortem blood pooling, and the carcass was foul. No wounds or other abnormalities noted. Too decomposed to necropsy.

Consulted with FWC. Judged to have been entrained postmortem.

2. REHAB (NON-CAUSAL). Stranding# STW170317-02. Emaciated and lethargic subadult loggerhead removed from the 5-inch barrier net in the morning. The plastron was deeply sunken in; no ventral measurements were taken due to the animal's fragile condition. The turtle appeared to be moribund.

Moderate fresh scrapes on top of head (skull exposed). FWC transported the turtle to the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach for rehabilitation.

3. Adult male. Tail length = 495 mm. Moderate fresh scrape just above nares.
4. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 2/24/17 and 3/28/17.
