Dear Chairman:
I have received a copy of a letter from Congressman Christopher Smith to you requesting an independent safety review of the drywell at the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Plant as requested by the NRC. It is my understanding from Congressman Smith's letter that the NRC staff has determined an in-house review conducted by the Division of Engineering Technology complies
,with the NRC's instruction to use "appropriate expertise" of this safety analysis. I am writing 'to
-support Congressman Smith's position and would urge the NRC to have an independent review.
This would comply with the intent of the recommendation by the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board which recommended using Sandia National Laboratories.
.'Through the entire relicensing process, the Board -of Chosen Freeholders has been
'particularly concerned that at the end of the process the public would have faith in the decision by the NRC. I It is essential for the public to have confidence that the plant can continue to operate safely. Now that the NRC has relicensed the facility, the independent review of this critical safety measure would help insure public confidence in that decision.
Thank you for your consideration of my request.
Ve truly yours, h .
