Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary October 2008

Dear Meghan,

Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for October 2008. In October, we captured seventeen (17) Caretta caretta and fifty five (55)

Chelonia mydas at the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on South Hutchinson Island. On October 12, a juvenile green turtle, with a small, blunt force puncture to the anterior carapace was net captured. This injury was likely due to entrainment through the intake pipes. After consultation with FWCC personnel the injury was considered causal to power plant operation. On the same day another green turtle was found dead at the top of the primary barrier net with a severe injury to the left front flipper. This injury was likely caused by a boat propeller prior to entrainment. After consultation with FWCC personnel this mortality was not considered causal to power plant operation. On October 16, a lethargic and underweight loggerhead was captured and transported to the Marinelife Center in Juno Beach for rehabilitation. After consultation with personnel from FWCC the condition of this turtle was not considered a result of power plant operation. All other turtles were released on the same day of capture.

Tag numbers and morphmetric data for all turtles are attached. Also, attached is a spreadsheet of all captures, mortalities, injuries and causal events delineated by species and month for 2008. This spreadsheet tracks fresh scrapes and will be helpful in determining the success of the intake pipe cleaning project.
